Last week I was not able to write a post because I had gone
to get a bicycle; I know, I know; it sounds a bit lame and puerile doesn’t it? Well
it isn’t. You see I have always loved cycling ever since I was a young boy but
prior to this year I hadn’t seriously engaged in this passion of mine. All I
needed was a little push and this I got from our very own Chris Froome. No this
guy isn’t British (still in denial) as you all might know he was born and
partly raised in Kenya before moving to South Africa for studies after which he
switched nationalities; in fact he even cycled under our very flag a few times
so yes, we have every right to claim him as our own.
Once I realized that Chris Froome was going to win this
year’s edition of the Tour De France, an old passion awakened in me and I just
had to get myself a bike. Now cycling is one of the best cardio and toning
exercises there is and so by simply indulging in this passion every now and
then, I will be doing my body a whole lot of good without really feeling as
though I am torturing myself. And this is basically my topic for the day; you
have to do what you love when it comes to exercising.
I have seen people take up exercises that not only do they
know nothing about but also hate. Just because it is called a workout doesn’t
mean it has to be torturous. While it might be necessary to engage in some
exercises that you may not be too fond of from time to time in order to get to
where you need to be, it is always important to do something that you love. For
example if you love football don’t just watch it on TV, go to the pitch once in
a while and get a game going. Equally basketball lovers, it would be a good
idea to hit the court with a few friends every now and then.
All these are great sports and trust me they will give you a
very good workout and as a result you will be able to break the monotony that
is your exercise regimen. When you engage in a workout that you love, you will
benefit more than if you forced yourself to do something that you are not too
fond of.
In the months to come, I intend to put a great deal of
emphasis on my cycling. On the day I bought my bike, I rode about 30 KM and in
the last two days I have done a little over 50 kilometers. As far as cycling is
concerned this really is just child’s play but everyone has to start somewhere
right? And you know what inspires me the most; the fact that I have access to
the very hills and valleys that the great Chris Froome trained on as a young
lad in Kenya!
